From the Student Center at West Salem High School, we would like to nominate Nancy Stone, Dove Stubenrauch and Hugh McIntyre for the Going the Distance award. Nancy is our discipline secretary and Dove & Hugh are the campus monitors.

Whether they are dealing with students, teachers, parents or community members, they do it with compassion and a great sense of humor. They handle student supervision, student discipline, bus issues, medical emergencies and locker frustrations with a seemingly unending supply of smiles, laughter and patience.

We appreciate Nancy, Dove & Hugh here at West Salem High School and are proud to know them as colleagues and friends.

Cathy Sanford
School Bus Driver
Transporation

cathy sandford going the distance

I am writing to let you know about my experience riding bus #267 in the afternoons with Cathy Sanford. I started doing this in December 2008.

During this time, I have noticed how kind, caring and compassionate Cathy is to each of the students that she transports, including mine. She takes the time to make eye contact with each one of them, talking to them, while making sure their seat belts are fastened securely, and things are in order before she sits down to start their drive home.

It is very important to her that all safety measures are followed at all times. For example, I have never seen her stop at a railroad crossing without, of course coming to a complete stop first, always opening the doors,  turning down the music, and looking both ways. She takes her job seriously and that is very important to me, as I am sure it is to their parents.

Working with special education students is not an easy task. She expects them to listen to her at all times and follow the rules, otherwise there are consequences. As a result the students respect and love her which is easily seen when they depart.

It has been a pleasure to ride bus #267, and getting to know Cathy. I thought she was veteran bus driver and just found out she has only been on the job a little over a year and a half. I never would have guessed! She does a terrific job and I just wanted to let you know that.

Roxanne Warren and Amy MacTaggart would like to nominate: Bill Wittman, Cindy Van Leuven, Gracie Logan, Nicole McGowan, Katherine Dubois-Guido and Christi McClinton from Harritt Elementary School for the Going the Distance award.

The Harritt Elementary School staff has embraced a new style of teaching for many of their students. They have begun to use visual materials for instruction and support in both general education and special education classes. These staff members have attended multiple trainings throughout the year to improve their knowledge and skills in providing instruction and support to students within the autism spectrum. The school has supported the purchase of equipment and programs to create these supports and benefit children’s school success. Harritt Elementary School staff rocks!
